This symposium brings together justice-impacted individuals, civil legal aid providers, public defenders, and BIPOC attorneys to reflect on the realities and possibilities of a more just legal system. There will be 3 panels including:
Lived Experience First: Justice-impacted individuals will share powerful stories of navigating systems of punishment, support, reentry, and the good work that is being done. Joseph Jackson, Executive Director of MPAC, will provide a first hand account of Maine’s carceral system.
Bridging Gaps in Access: Professionals who work within the systems and challenge the systems will discuss the opportunities and limitations of their work, and explore collaboration can advance justice.
BIPOC Attorney Roundtable: Attorneys of color will offer personal insights into their path to the profession, the structural barriers they faced, and the transformative role the play in building a more inclusive legal landscape.
Doors open at 12:30pm, event starts at 1pm.
