Arts Programming Initiative of the Maine Prisoner Advocacy Coalition

Maine Prisoner Advocacy Coalition believes in the transformative power of art, music, poetry, and film to promote empathy and change lives. Inside Vision is our arts programming initiative led by a dedicated team of MPAC staffers and volunteers in collaboration with the Maine Department of Corrections and Maine College of Art & Design.

Through curated gallery exhibitions, workshops, live performances, film screenings, guest speakers, and panel discussions, Inside Vision creates a platform for the public to engage with incarcerated individuals and artists, offering a unique lens through which to view their experiences and narratives. This initiative not only empowers but also enriches the cultural dialogue within and beyond the prison walls, for a greater sense of community and shared understanding.

Gallery Exhibits

Inside Vision: An Outside Exhibition of Inside Art showcases works created by incarcerated artists, highlighting their creativity and unique perspectives. Each piece serves as a medium for storytelling, reflecting the artists' insights and challenges faced during their incarceration. The gallery promotes a sense of community and understanding, inviting the public to engage with the nuances of the human experience. You can watch the video of our first Inside Vision Art Exhibit in collaboration with Freedom & Captivity here.

We’re currently exhibiting at L/A Arts. On view now until mid-May. Please join us for an open mic from Maine Inside Out on  May 19 6-8pm.

Workshops

Art and poetry workshops provide incarcerated individuals with the tools to express themselves through creative arts and written word. Participants explore themes of identity, resilience, and hope, guided by our team of experienced art instructors. These sessions are not only designed to develop artistic skills but also encourages emotional healing and self-reflection. This collaboration creates a supportive environment that helps incarcerated individuals reflect on their experiences and envision a more positive future.

The impact of art education extends beyond the classroom, promoting rehabilitation and a deeper understanding of oneself and others.

In addition to gallery exhibits and workshops, Inside Vision also organizes monthly events for incarcerated audiences at each of the Maine Carceral facilities from film screenings, panel discussions, book readings, to guest speakers and live performances, including engagements sponsored by the Maine State Prison Chapter of the NAACP.
