MPAC Hosts Virtual Community Classroom on Maine’s Criminal Legal System

The Maine Prisoner Advocacy Coalition (MPAC) successfully hosted a virtual Community Classroom on Maine’s criminal legal system on Wednesday, December 10, drawing strong engagement from across the state. More than 80 people registered, with 45 active participants attending the live session.

The free, statewide event offered an in-depth look at how Maine’s criminal legal system operates, who it impacts, and how communities can take meaningful action to advocate for change. Participants heard directly from experts, individuals with lived experience inside the system, and advocates working on the front lines, providing valuable insight into both policy and personal impact.

The program included updates from bill sponsors on pending legislation, including Clean Slate, the creation of an Ombuds, and Parole reform. Attendees also gained practical advocacy tools, such as how to write effective legislative testimony, Letters to the Editor, and Op-Eds.

The Community Classroom created space for learning, dialogue, and connection, reinforcing MPAC’s commitment to community education and collective action in pursuit of a more just and humane criminal legal system in Maine.

MPAC will continue to share information about upcoming Community Classrooms, workshops, and ways for community members to get involved.
